Sumario:Herrera de la Mancha was started in 1979, as the first máximum security jail in Spain. Its building was one of the main points of the penitenciary reform, which it must improve the penitentiary system inherited from Franquism. For that purpose, they need a tough prison. So that, Herrera de la Mancha was used to the most dangerous prisoners collective for the administation. Firstly, the remaining prisoners of COPEL, which made riots during the spanish transition. Secondly, GRAPO prisoners, which had a confrontation with the security forces. Lastly, ETA prisoners, which where concentrated between 1983 and 1989 in the safest prison of the country. Because of this, we have characterised Herrera as the punishment jail of the spanish penitentiary system during those years.
