Sumario:This research attempts to build the development of Valencian assotiationism in the late medieval period, enquiring into the relevance of confraternities and coorporative organisation for the structure of urban society. Its chronology encompasses from the 13th century Christian conquest until the first decades of the 16th. The process of creation, development and consolidation of 86 religious and professional confraternities will be analised in the context of the city of Valencia between 1246 and 1516, covering from the foundation of the first Valencian confraternity under the reign of James I until the death of Ferdinand the Catholic. The theoretical framework discusses the main European and national contributions on the field, reflecting upon the complex terminology employed by historians to describe these assotiative formulae (confraria, almoina, ofici, confraria d'ofici, coorporation, guild). Then there will be a chronological explanation of the political and legal context in which this coorporative phenomenon consolidated. Chapter three represents a proposal of cathegorisation that distinguishes eight confraternal cathegories in Valencia, describing in depth the development of each of the identified confraternities. The last chapters undertake a comparative analysis of the confraternities under exploration. This is based on their functioning (governmental charges, labour organisation, women involvement, representation systems, etc), the devotional and assistance obligations of their fellows, their common properties and their funding resources. This is all accompanied by an extensive corpus of 667 documents directly related with the topic under study, which has been the basis of this research in combination with other existent published work.
