description This research attempts to build the development of Valencian assotiationism in the late medieval period, enquiring into the relevance of confraternities and coorporative organisation for the structure of urban society. Its chronology encompasses from the 13th century Christian conquest until the first decades of the 16th. The process of creation, development and consolidation of 86 religious and professional confraternities will be analised in the context of the city of Valencia between 1246 and 1516, covering from the foundation of the first Valencian confraternity under the reign of James I until the death of Ferdinand the Catholic. The theoretical framework discusses the main European and national contributions on the field, reflecting upon the complex terminology employed by historians to describe these assotiative formulae (confraria, almoina, ofici, confraria d'ofici, coorporation, guild). Then there will be a chronological explanation of the political and legal context in which this coorporative phenomenon consolidated. Chapter three represents a proposal of cathegorisation that distinguishes eight confraternal cathegories in Valencia, describing in depth the development of each of the identified confraternities. The last chapters undertake a comparative analysis of the confraternities under exploration. This is based on their functioning (governmental charges, labour organisation, women involvement, representation systems, etc), the devotional and assistance obligations of their fellows, their common properties and their funding resources. This is all accompanied by an extensive corpus of 667 documents directly related with the topic under study, which has been the basis of this research in combination with other existent published work.

La cronología abarca desde la conquista cristiana en el siglo XIII hasta las primeras décadas del siglo XVI. En consecuencia, se analiza el proceso de creación, desarrollo y consolidación de 86 cofradías religiosas y profesionales, entre otras, erigidas en la ciudad de Valencia entre 1246 y 1516, desde la fundación de la primera cofradía valenciana durante el reinado de Jaime I hasta la muerte de Fernando el Católico. En el marco teórico se establece un balance historiográfico general a partir de las principales aportaciones bibliográficas europeas y nacionales y se reflexiona sobre la complejidad terminológica de las fórmulas asociativas empleadas por los historiadores (confraria, almoina, ofici, confraria d´ofici, corporación y gremio). Después, se traza un recorrido cronológico que trata de explicar el contexto político y normativo en el que se forjó el proceso de consolidación del fenómeno corporativo. En el tercer capítulo se realiza una propuesta de categorización que distingue hasta ocho tipologías confraternales en Valencia y se describe de manera detallada el devenir institucional de cada una de las cofradías identificadas. Los últimos apartados recogen un análisis comparativo entre los organismos estudiados, el cual se centra en los modelos de estructura y funcionamiento interno (cargos de gobierno, organización laboral, participación de las mujeres, órganos de representación, etc.), las obligaciones devocionales y benéfico-asistenciales de sus integrantes, el patrimonio comunitario y las fuentes de financiación de estas entidades. Todo ello viene acompañado de un extenso corpus documental que recopila 667 textos directamente relacionados con la temática de estudio y que, junto al cotejo de las fuentes ya publicadas, ha servido de base a la investigación.La presente ricerca tenta di ricostruire la traiettoria del fenomeno associativo valenzano nel periodo medievale, insistendo sull’importanza dell´organizzazione confraternale e corporativa per l’articolazione della società urbana. La cronologia si estende dalla conquista cristiana nel secolo XIII fino ai primi decenni del secolo XVI. Inoltre, si analizza il processo di creazione, sviluppo e consolidamento di 86 confraternite religiose e professionali, tra le altre, sorte nella città di Valenza tra il 1246 e il 1516, dalla fondazione della prima confraternita valenzana durante il regno di Giacomo I fino alla morte di Fernando il Cattolico. Nel quadro teorico si inserisce un bilancio storiografico generale, che parte dai principali contributi bibliografici europei e nazionali e si riflette sulla complessità terminologica delle formule associative adoperate dagli storici (confraria, almoina, ofici, confraria d´ofici, corporación e gremio). Successivamente, viene tracciato un percorso cronologico che tenta di spiegare il contesto politico e normativo in cui si forgiò il processo di consolidamento del fenomeno corporativo a Valenza. Nel terzo capitolo si realizza una proposta di categorizzazione che distingue fino ad otto tipologie confraternali a Valenza e si descrive in maniera dettagliata il divenire istituzionale di ognuna delle confraternite identificate. Le ultime sezioni comprendono un’analisi comparativa tra gli organi studiati, che si focalizza sui modelli di struttura e funzionamento interno (cariche di governo, organizzazione lavorativa, partecipazione femminile, organi di rappresentanza, ecc.), gli obblighi devozionali e benefico-assistenziali dei suoi membri, il patrimonio comunitario e le fonti di finanziamento di queste entità.
