Sumario: | Social currencies might be taken as an alternative means of exchange for goods and services which is controlled by its users and present a wide range of forms according to specific conditions and social and cultural aspects in which they can emerge. This paper aimed to investigate which contributions and effects are promoted under the use of social currencies in communities that are marked by substandard economic conditions and took into consideration the possibilities for local solidarity development. The research procedures were oriented by a critical and dialectical epistemology. The empirical approximation to the investigated object occurred through the experience analysis of a social currency named Pet Mania, located in the Portal Caiobá neighborhood in Campo Grande city in Mato Grosso do Sul. It was observed that social currencies might be used under the strategic purpose to confront money scarcity associated to a wealth concentration dynamics, promoting local productive capacities and contributing to the socioeconomic development of communities. The experience analysis revealed that the social currency used presented a differentiated productive backing based upon the collection of recyclables and indeed it contributed to local solidarity development, generating benefits to the environmental, economic and social segments of the community. |
