Crises and sanctions are temporary factors and cannot really globally affect the deep foundations of Russian statehood. The purpose of the article is to identify problematic aspects in the development of Russian federalism. As a result, it was shown that federalism in the Russian Federation has a constitutional and legal character and is the only acceptable device for Russia in view of its multinational composition. As a methodological basis, general logical research methods were used. The empirical basis of the study is a reliance on the articles of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, which has the highest legal force in Russia.
