GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS OF EROSION IN ARSUZ STREAM (ISKENDERUN, S, TURKEY)

Soil erosion which can be examined in general under two headings as natural and geological erosion causes the soil on earth to be carried to sea and lake environments day by day. This fact causes decreases in agricultural areas per capita in the world whose population is increasing rapidly. Erosion...

This fact causes decreases in agricultural areas per capita in the world whose population is increasing rapidly. Erosion is a particular problem in the Mediterranean Region due to its vulnerability in terms of physical properties, its irregular precipitation regime and its arid summers. Incorrect land use and destruction of flora will increase the dimensions of erosion even further. If measures are not taken, decreases in productivity will be inevitable as a result of the transfer of the soil which covers fertile agricultural areas and slopes to the sea. Current study investigated the causes of erosion in Arsuz Stream Basin which covers 148.99 km2 surface area in the south of Iskenderun district of Hatay Province. First of all, erosion susceptibility map was generated and soil amount carried by erosion was calculated. RUSLE method which uses rainfall-runoff erosivity ( R) , soil erodibility (K), slope length (LS), cover-management (C) and support practice (P) factors. It was identified that 4.12% of the study area has severe and very severe erosion according to the susceptibility map originated during the study. Geological, slope, soil and land cover maps were later compared with the susceptibility map to search for the causes of erosion. It was found that the erosion observed in the study filed is accelerated erosion caused by land use.Mehmet DEĞERLİYURTFırat Universityarticleerosion susceptibility analysisrusleiskenderunarsuz streamgeographical information systemSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 6, Iss 22, Pp 321-344 (2021)
