Sumario:On Untypical Roles of the Interpreter of Small Business Meetings This paper presents some untypical interpreters’ roles which emerge in the course of their work often enough to be considered as typical. The topic will be discussed from the viewpoint of a theorist with many years of practical experience, through the example of interpreting informal business meetings, which provide particularly rich empirical material. The interpreter is presented as an assistant, informant, adviser, situation manager, censor, conciliator, actor, therapist, but sometimes also whipping boy and petitioner. The reasons why the interpreter accepts these tasks are explained and some resulting dangers are pointed to.
