The goal of the paper is to present culturemes, a concept used in cultural studies, glottodidactics, translation studies, and ethnolinguistics. As is the case with many terms in humanities, also cultureme has several understandings. In the ethnolinguistic perspective, culturemes are related to Anna Wierzbicka’s key words, Walery Pisarek’s flag words, and Michael Fleischer’s collective symbols. Polish research into culturemes was initiated by Alicja Nagórko who defines them as ‘key words which are important for the self-identification of a community, and which characterize both the community’s attitude towards tradition and inherited values, and how it copes with the present time and with the current experiencing of the world’. One as yet unrealized goal is to identify and list Polish culturemes; this is one of the more urgent tasks of ethnolinguistics.
