In this subject this paper analyzes the economic and social development as consequences of investment in transport infrastructure. The article analyzes the effects of the BR-163 highway in the Brazilian human development index (HDI) of the municipalities in the states of Mato Grosso (MT) and Pará (PA). Methodologically, the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) was the statistical method used, which, by comparison between the municipalities, estimates the average effect of the presence of the highway BR-163. The findings show a positive effect in social and economics indicators as a result of investments in logistics infrastructure. In the Mato Grosso (MT) and Pará (PA) states, municipalities located around this highway has higher HDI in relation to other comparable municipalities. The findings highlight the importance of improvements of public policies that aims to promote economic development through infrastructure investments in Brazil.
