The learning of a new language with new voices, words, and grammatical structures is a difficult process. An investigation for feelings, attitudes and perceptions about learning a foreign language is an important aspect for the learning quality. Positive feelings and attitudes towards the new learning domain play an effective role of processing and storing in the mind. The aim of this study is to explore the perception of university preparatory class students toward speaking skills in foreign language. This research was performed with 148 students from School of foreign Languages at the University of Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli during the academic term 2016-2017. Of the 148 university students, 97 were female and 51 were male. Phenomenology, which is a sort of qualitative analysis, is used in this research. Also qualitative analysis is used throughout gathering, analyzing and interpretation of data. Students were asked to complete sentences like “Speaking in foreign language is like… because…” in order to reveal their comprehension about speaking skills. Data was analyzed by using content analysis method. According to the results of this analysis 148 university students produced 118 metaphors. As these metaphors were analyzed it has shown that they gather in 6 categories with common skills.Bahar İŞİGÜZELFırat Universityarticlemetaphorspeaking skillforeign languageperceptionphenomenologySocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 10, Iss 57, Pp 25-37 (2019) |
