Sumario:The discussion about the books and the criticism of theoretical knowledge, devoid of the spirit of prayer, was one of the most controversial topics in Order of Friars Minor. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of this aspect in hagiographic construction of St. Francis of Assisi, examining excerpts from Vita I, by Thomas of Celano and Legenda Maior, by St. Bonaventure in order to detect similarities and differences that appear in Crónicas da Ordem dos Frades Menores, by Fr. Marcos de Lisboa.
