Sumario: | Growth and physical-mechanical
properties of 17 years old teak (Tectona
grandis) growing in San Joaquin, Abangares,
Costa Rica. The national and international
market of forest products, from certifieddad.
managment forests and plantations, is
increasingly more demanding as to the standards
and characteristics of high quality. The physicalmecanicas
mechanical properties of the teak (Tectona
grandis), growing in San Joaqufn de Abangares,
Costa Rica, at 30 m and 100 16´ north latitude, are
determined according to the ASTM standard Destudiadas
143-83. The physical properties of teak timber
studied were: basic specific weight, radial,
tangential and volumetric contractions,
contraction ratio, dry and green density and point
of fiber saturation. The mechanical properties
studied were: static flexure, shear, hardness,
parallel and perpendicular compression. Also
included were comparisons with teak timber
harvested in other places and latitudes, as well as
other hardwood species. The coefficient of
variation of the basic specific weight of the San
Joaquin de Abangares teak (3.4%) is half that of
the Quepos teak (7%) and almost one third of the
average of 50 species (10%), which is an... |
