Joseph Campbell called these patterns as “monomythos” a word derived by him from the book “Finnegans Wake” by James Joyce. Jung defines great researches, explorations, feats and actions by character archetype. The character goes beyond unconsciousness and tries to realize his personality as a whole. The paradigm of the journey of the character shall not be considered as a complete physical adventure of various phases. The main qualification and significance of the model of the character’s journey is that it’s a psychological process emerging emotionally. According to this model, the character starts a journey and passes through some archetypes. Globally, many similar tales sharing the same archetypes are noticed. Alice follows a white rabbit, whereas Aladdin pursues the daughter of the sultan. This validates Joseph Campbell, that is, the journey, the researches of the mythological character, almost always follows the same archetypical model. This takes us to the similarities among folk tales and narratives, also to universality. The universality of the case fits the general concept of archetype defined by Jung: archetypes obtaining different meanings locally, though, universally represent similar cultural contents. Folk tales, one of Turkish belles-lettres, act like a mirror reflecting folk culture. In the study, the narrative “Aşık Garip”, a well-known folk tale, is to be studied and analyzed through “monomythos”, the journey of the character, formulated as “departure-archetype-arrival “by Campbell.İlke TEPEKÖYLÜFırat Universityarticleaşık garipjoseph campbellmonomythosheroSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 9, Iss 47, Pp 419-428 (2019) |
