| Sumario: | The study aims at finding out how Object assignment put forward by Dik (1978) within the framework of Functional Grammar and object marking phenomena proposed by Kenan (1975, 1976) occur in Turkish. In the study, three texts selected from Yakın Plan broadcasted in NTV channel and a 30-minutes conversation were transcribed and then from the data samples were chosen randomly and analyzed. Dik (1978), suggests that the possibilities to assign Subject and Object syntactic roles to semantic roles in languages are restricted by semantic function hierarchy. According to Dik (1978), the relation between Object assignment and semantic function hierarchy can be revealed under the headings of (a) continuity hypothesis b) cut-off point c) markedness d) the degree of grammaticality e) language change f) dialectical variation. In this study, object assignment in Turkish was studies under those headings proposed by Dik (1978). The findings of the study show that in Turkish object grammatical relation is marked by case system, word order and verb semantics and thus all the semantic roles other than Agent in the semantic function hierarchy can be assigned Object function. In addition, the findings of the study also revealed that Goal semantic role marked by nominative case and accusative case overlaps with Indirect Object while other semantic roles in the semantic function hierarcy coded by Dative case and Ablative case are used to mark direct object. |
