The process of increasing land prices respond in part to the rise in international commodityprices, and in part to speculative behavior of the agents involved using the land also as a store ofvalue. The objective of this study was to identify the structure of the land market, viewing the actionand interaction of agents involved in it and how to set up, from that, the operation of purchases andsales and rentals in Uruguay, in the period 2000-2011. From the study of rent under the neoclassicaland Marxist theories, it was building a theoretical framework for understanding the behavior of diffe-rent agents. The methodology was based on analysis of documents and secondary information, andsupplemented with interviews with qualified informants. The results show that policies supportedin neoclassical theory has structured a liberalized land market and promoted the free movement ofproperty titles. The direct consequence of this is the promotion of speculative behavior with the landand the exclusion of small producers more undercapitalized.Gustavo BenítezPedro Selvino NeumannUniversidade Regional do Noroeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sularticleproduction systemsland marketland rentEconomic growth, development, planningHD72-88PTDesenvolvimento em Questão, Vol 13, Iss 31, Pp 356-394 (2015)
