Summary:This paper analyzes the restructuring process experienced by the Spanish savings banks during the period 1986 to 2013, based on the evolution in their network of branches. With the liberalization they had since 1989 and the possibility of expanding without restrictions, there is a first period of expansion and opening of branches. The economic and financial crisis, which has affected the entire banking sector, has been more intense in the savings banks that were involved in a process of mergers and through Institutional Systems of Protection (SIP) the closure of a large number of offices. In addition, the paper performs a depth analysis of each entity at the provincial level, highlighting the calculation of the Herfindahl index to know the degree of rivalry in each market. Finally the situation of the new scenario is explained after the restructuring process.
