Sumario:The inclusion of external sources of knowledge in the innovation process of organizations hascaused many businesses to obtain good results of innovation and high performance. Among themare micro and small businesses that have demonstrated success in using these sources and showpeculiarities in their use. Given the above, the study sought to understand the role of external sourcesof knowledge in the innovation process of micro and small enterprises, based on an analysis of thesources of external knowledge accessed and its use in innovation strategies of these companies. It isa multiple-case study of seven enterprises with innovation practices. As result, six companies havedemonstrated the use of external knowledge sources in their innovation process and overcame thechallenges that made them seek the open innovation model as a business model. Furthermore, theresults showed that micro and small businesses not only use external knowledge in their innovationstrategies, as can form an effective innovation process through these sources.
