Sumario: | Leon A. Casso is considered the most important exponent of the Moldovan nobility during the period when Bessarabia was a province of the Tsarist Empire. He held a doctorate in law from the University of Berlin and was professor of civil law at the Universities of Dorpat (Tartu), Kharkov and Moscow. He also had an important political career as Minister of Public Education and was one of the main confidants of Tsar Nicholas II. Leon Casso’s extensive legal projects include three works that present the state and development of law in Bessarabia after the annexation in 1812. Casso’s theories on the preservation of the Romanist foundations of law in Bessarabia were used in the process of unification of the legislation in the United Romania. Professor Stefan Berechet made an essential contribution to the translation, commentary and popularization of these works. The article analyses the content and significance of Leon Casso’s works, highlighting the context of the translations and the involvement of the Faculty of Law in Iaşi in this endeavour. |
