Istanbul as a symbol of tragedy, nostalgia and survival has a particular importance for Russians, who migrated from their country after the 1917 October Revolution which changed the fate of millions. The Russian immigrants who left their mother land forever have taken on the mission of maintaining their classic Russian life-style, culture and traditions in the countries they went to through art and literature. Especially the first wave Russian immigrants which constituted the first migration wave have published their own magazines, books and newspapers and founded their own theatres and art communities in these countries. In the beginning of 1920’s, the Russian immigrants who came to an occupied Istanbul have tried to adapt to a very different environment from the life-style they were used to and struggled to maintain their cultural and artistic activities despite conditions created by the occupation of the city and financial impossibilities. However the most restricted place among the other centers, where the first wave Russian immigrants lived apart from their country, was Istanbul. No doubt that it was closely connected with some factors as occupation conditions, the differences in language, religion and culture, censorship, social contexture and economic crisis. Despite everything, in short their stay in Istanbul the Russian immigrants were able to establish their own publications. In this study, the publication activities carried out by the Russian immigrants between the years 1919-1924, during which they mostly stayed in Istanbul, will be handled in general and the newspapers, magazines and books they published during the immigration period will be attempted to be conveyed within a general framework.Gamze ÖKSÜZFırat Universityarticleistanbul under occupationrussian immigrantscensorshippublisherspublication activitiesSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 9, Iss 52, Pp 71-78 (2019) |
