Sumario: | Infectious diseases have threatened human existence and societies throughout history. These diseases, which spread in many ways, especially population movements, caused great destruction. Smallpox, which has a history dating back thousands of years, is among the most important infectious diseases that threaten humanity. The disease caused great loss of life in the regions where it spread, and therefore states gave great importance to the fight against the disease. The fight against the smallpox, epidemic started in the Ottoman Empire period. Smallpox, was among the epidemic diseases that caused great destruction, especially during the Balkan and First World wars. The fight against smallpox epidemics continued during the National Struggle and the Republic periods. In the Republican period, smallpox epidemics generally passed to Anatolia from neighboring countries such as Syria, Iraq and Iran by various means. For this reason, the governments of the Republic have taken necessary measures in the regions on the border in order to protect against smallpox epidemics coming from abroad. In addition, intensive work was started to suppress the cases that spread and detected in the country without giving an opportunity to outbreaks. The Ministry of Health and Social Assistance sent health teams to the regions where the disease was spread and vaccination studies were started on a large scale. In this study, the smallpox epidemics that spread from Syria during the Republic period from 1926-1931, Syria and Iraq between 1942-1944, and from Iran, Iraq and Syria between 1956-1957 and the measures taken in the country with border gates will be examined. |
