Sumario:In this paper, results from the International Program of Student Evaluation, sponsored by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, are analyzed. It was carried out with students from different countries, including Mexico. In the case of Mexican students, they show a deficit as regards reading competencies. The reaction, as a result of the study, of the International Reading Association is also shown. Three possible reasons of the problem are analyzed: social, educational and psychological reasons and, it is shown a governmental response, which is considered as unsatisfactory by the author of this paper.
