The governance of interorganizational networks has received increasing attention from academia, but there are still knowledge gaps both from the theoretical as the managerial point of view. In particular, its influence on the effectiveness of cooperation initiatives remains largely unknown. The research contributes to the theory on network governance and offers insights to managers on how to organize the governance. Based on a sample of 50 cooperation networks established in southern Brazil we selected five cases that provided the highest levels of effectiveness as well as five cases that showed the lowest effectiveness levels. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with three representatives from each network, totaling 30 interviews. The results show that there are significant differences in the governance of both groups. Networks with higher effectiveness levels adopt a governance mode of Network Administrative Organization, more centralized decision-making, higher level processes formalization, and specialized teams to discuss and propose collective strategies. Networks with lower levels of effectiveness adopt a shared governance mode. In these networks decisions are less centralized, with low levels of formal processes and limited specialization.
