Sumario: | Politics is a social domain whose practices are discursively realized. In this social domain, politicians, as political actors, try to persuade the masses they appeal in line with their own ideologies and opinions. In this respect, political discourse is one of the research areas of Critical Discourse Analysis. In political discourse based on persuading people, politicians often use argumentation strategies to justify their views or refute opposing views to persuade their voters. For this reason, political discourse is argumentative. According to Fairclough and Fairclough, politics is mainly about making choices about how to act in response to circumstances and goals, and political discourse should focus on the analysis of practical argumentation. Accordingly, Fairclough and Fairclough (2012) proposed a framework called “Practical Reasoning Model” aimed at analyzing the structure of practical arguments. This study aims to determine the practical argumentation structures that include the practical arguments used by the Izmir Metropolitan Mayor candidates of the Republic and Nation Alliances before the 2019 Local Elections. To this end, the TV interviews of the two candidates were analyzed by Fairclough and Fairclough (2012) using the Practical Reasoning Model to answer the following research questions: “What kind of practical argumentation structures are used in Turkish political discourse in the context of local elections?”, “Do the structures used by the candidates of the two alliances differ from each other?”. The findings obtained as a result of the analysis of the database show that practical argumentation structures regarding general politics, local issues, and projects, voters, and municipal administration are used in the context of local elections within the Izmir context. While arguments about general politics and local problems and projects were put forward by both candidates of alliances, the arguments about the voters were put forward by the candidate of the Public Alliance and the arguments about the municipal administration by the candidate of the Nation Alliance. |
