The protected physiological state of intracellular Salmonella enterica persisters reduces host cell-imposed stress
Schulte et al. show that non-replicating Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium persisters, which are tolerant to antibiotics, sense their environment and respond to stressors. This study suggests that stress sensing and response of persisters may be targeted as an antimicrobial strategy.
