OPERATION OF THEMATISATION IN SPONTANEOUS SPOKEN TURKISH : LINGUISTIC STRUCTURES AND MARKERS

In spoken language studies, there is a general tendency to rely on or refer to written language as linguistic criteria. However, these two linguistic registers being compared, quite different structural and functional features will become obvious. In other words, it is possible to regard written and...

However, these two linguistic registers being compared, quite different structural and functional features will become obvious. In other words, it is possible to regard written and spoken language as two different worlds. For this reason, with an appropriate approach of Saussure’s linguistic, it is helpful to study spoken language within its own and for its own benefit. This study aims to examine the thematic structures and markers used in thematisation process, which may occur during mutual conversation in spoken Turkish. With this purpose in mind, firstly, spoken utterances obtained from a sufficiently large corpus are to be classified in terms of their morphosyntactic structure. We will later endeavor to interpret these utterances as we relate to each other certain fields of linguistics, such as morphology and syntax, enunciation and prosody. Within the scope of discursive analytical approach from segmentation towards interpretation, we initially seek to determine the morphosyntactic features of the utterances. We will then take the prosodic features of the same utterances into our account and continue our study with their enunciative interpretation, where a method based on association will be employed. A 90 minutes oral corpus consisting of 190 pages and 1130 utterances obtained from a comprehensive study, will be used. The language of this oral corpus is contemporary Turkish, now spoken in Turkey. As for the theory and method of the study, in order to examine oral language, the intonation and enunciation theory and discourse analysis method are used in the light of French Linguistics. With the realization of this study, it is sought to make a contribution to the field of oral language in modern Turkish today in Turkey. In this way, enlightening information and data on the standart functioning and the model of “thematisation” in spoken Turkish, being one of the linguistic phenomena, is expected to be obtained.Selim YILMAZArsun URAS YILMAZFırat UniversityarticleenunciationmarkermorphosyntaxprosodythematisationSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 6, Iss 20, Pp 1155-1174 (2019)
