Sumario:Some mechanisms governing the occurrence of electric discharges in air at atmospheric pressure have been analyzed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. It has been shown that several electron avalanches can be simultaneously and randomly initiated on the active surface of the cathode; at the same time, the plasma ions can cause additional avalanches both on the cathode surface and in the gap.
