Sumario:Widespread communication networks like new media have some ideological functions while disseminating information as it is pointed out in critical approaches. New media contents including discriminatory statements can lead to reproduce unequal relations. This study aims to evaluate the role of new media in spreading and justifying gendered-discriminatory discourses. The study focuses on the othering and stereotyping strategies against women by examining the news pages of web sites of Turkish Press. The most following four web sites reporting daily news (haberturk.com, gazetevatan.com, milliyet.com.tr, hurriyet.com.tr) are selected as a research sample. News discourses are examined by using the method of content analysis within a month period. Web sites are chosen to analyse how gendered-disciriminatory discourses reproduced and normalised in new media. Consequently othering and stereotyping strategies against women which are dominant in web sites are determined in a quantitative method. Findings show that women are represented as victim, weak, accused, unsuccessful, untalented on the discourse of new media. Besides, women such as famous, icon or fenemon are more repsented on new media by commodification of their bodies. Showing physical features of women, using negative narratives against women, frequently representing domestic roles are caused to “othering” and “stereotying”. Women’s voices on new media are hindered by the patriarchal constructions and ideological constraints. The assessment of the construction of the discriminatory discourse enable to reveal close relation between ideological feature of patriarchal regime and daily language. Discrimination on discourses are lead to reproducing inequalities and power relations.
