El trabajo taxonómico más reciente del género es el publicado por Cabrera en 1937, donde se reconocen siete subgéneros sobre la base del hábito y de las características de las brácteas del involucro. Sin embargo, en el único estudio filogenético que existe sobre el género, indican que la mayoría de estos grupos infragenéricos son parafiléticos. En el presente trabajo se dan a conocer las características cariotípicas de Chaetanthera moenchioides y se compara esta información con la que se ha obtenido anteriormente para otras cinco especies del género. Además, se discuten los resultados cariotípicos, desde una perspectiva taxonómica y evolutiva. Aunque preliminares, las evidencias cariotípicas son coincidentes con los resultados filogenéticos, corroborando la parafilia del subgénero Chaetanthera e indicando que, en general, los cambios tenderían a una disminución en el número de cromosomas. Por otro lado, la longitud del genoma disminuye y la asimetría del cariotipo aumenta en especies que crecen a mayor altitud.<br>Chaetanthera is an exclusively South American genus comprising 42 species approximately. Although being a genus taxonomically well-studied, there are discrepancies with the evolutionary studies that have been made about it. The most recent taxonomic study of Chaethanthera was published by Cabrera in 1937 recognizing seven subgenera, based on the habit and involucre bracts characteristics. However, in the only phylogenetic study about the genus, these groups are paraphyletic. In the present work, karyotypical characteristics oí Chaetanthera moenchioides are given and comparisons with other five species oí Chaetanthera are done. The results are discussed from taxonomic and evolutionary perspective. Although preliminary, karyotypical evidence is congruent with the phylogenetic results corroborating to Chaetanthera as a paraphyletic subgenus and indicating that changes in the karyotype of Chaetanthera would occurred with decrease in chromosome number.
