Sumario:This article explores the involvement of Chilean subaltern groups in country’s Independence, between 1810 and 1830.  Placing this process in the context of the latest Latin American research, the analysis is focused on military and political events, detecting a rather passive popular response to pro-independence solicitations, but a much more spontaneous and persistent adherence to the royalist side.  Ultimately, the scenario of political experimenting opened up by the Independence struggles seems to have been more conducive to subaltern erosion of pre-existing social controls than to political deliberation as such, but even that proved enough to elicit the Conservative reaction masterminded by Diego Portales.
