| Sumario: | This study analyzed the main externalities that would be potentially generated by the hydroelectric plant (HPP) in Estreito, state of Maranhão. The research questioned to Impact Study (EIS)/Environmental Impact Report on the Environment (EIRE). The methodology included open interviews with those involved in the project (representatives of the Association of Municipality of Estreito and Secretary of Planning and Development of Estreito, a responsible official by company of the Consórcio Estreito Energia – CESTE, and leadership of the Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens) and collected information on the reports pertaining to the scope of the hydroelectric area. Then we evaluated the economic, social and environmental impacts of the implementation of HPP Estreito and compared with the proposals made by the EIS/EIRE. The study found that the proposed environmental programs outlined in the EIS/EIRE were not sufficient to mitigate the social and environmental impacts caused by the implementation of UHE Estreito. |
