The sampling comprises 200 fourth grader prospective teachers in the programmes of Turkish Language Teaching and Primary School Teaching at the faculties of education of two universities in the provinces of Ankara and Bolu. To realize the aims of the study, two reading texts from the primary school Turkish course books, one being informative and the other narrative, were determined randomly. Prospective teachers were asked to read and summarize these texts in two different class hours. “The Evaluative Scale of Summarized Texts” was used to grade the adequacy levels of the summaries made by the prospective teachers. The data obtained from the grading of the summarized texts were evaluated in terms of the variables of text types, gender, reading habit, following periodicals, ranking preference of the teaching profession, satisfaction from undergraduate education. The results indicate that the prospective Turkish teachers’ summarizing skills in both narrative and informative texts are at midlevel, while those of the Primary School teachers are weak. Generally speaking, it can be said that prospective teachers’ summarizing skills are not at an adequate level. A significant correlation was found to exist between prospective teachers’ summarizing skills and the variables of reading habit, following periodicals, ranking preference of the teaching profession, satisfaction from undergraduate education. No such correlation was observed between their summarizing skills and the variable of gender.
