Sumario:This topic dates back to the end of the 18th century, when Portugal and Spain tried to define their colonial borders in South America. The setting is a fluvial and lacustrine area within South America currently known as Pantanal. This article studies the passage of the Portuguese naturalist expedition named “Philosophical Journey” through Pantanal and its relation with another expedition, also Portuguese, that was carried out some years before to demarcate the borders, visiting and mapping the same area. The encounter between the naturalist caravan and a group of the indigenous warrior people of the Guaikuru is noteworthy; this episode is described in texts, with graphical representations of the chiefs. It is interesting to observe the relations that existed between expeditions and between these and the indigenous peoples to illustrate how Portugal used enlightened knowledge to conquer and expand the boundaries of its territories in South America, using science as a strategic practice.
