This article studies the passage of the Portuguese naturalist expedition named “Philosophical Journey” through Pantanal and its relation with another expedition, also Portuguese, that was carried out some years before to demarcate the borders, visiting and mapping the same area. The encounter between the naturalist caravan and a group of the indigenous warrior people of the Guaikuru is noteworthy; this episode is described in texts, with graphical representations of the chiefs.
