Sumario:The aim of this paper is to study the limits of the Americanisation of knowledge. Following the expedition led by Francisco Hernández in Mexico, and the fate of the manuscripts produced during it, the paper focuses on all the ruptures, flaws, and misunderstandings that disrupted or made impossible the European appropriation of American knowledge. It shows that, paradoxically, it was because Francisco Hernández went very far in the adoption of Indian thought that his Natural History could not be accepted by his contemporaries. It reveals, finally, that the political stakes of Spanish settlement in Americas inhibited the transmission of that knowledge.
