Sumario:From a historiographical perspective, 1902 was for Paraguay a crucial year as it was then that the first controversy about the war against the Triple Alliance took place. The young journalist Juan O’Leary, just over 20 years old, and the renowned lawyer Cecilio Báez, would keep an unparalleled historiographical controversy published in two newspapers La Patria and El Cívico from October 16th to February 14th of the said year. This article exposes the context, the epistemologies and the explanations sustained by both polemicists. Next, the consequences of the dispute are examined in relation to the construction of the Paraguayan historical memory, and the current historical practice in that country.
