Sumario:The ashes of heroes. Present times’ memories and histories in Venezuela. This essay aims to explore relationships between repetedly transformed « present times » — for and from the official history — and a very mythified past which goes back to Independence Wars. Il also displays the different ways national history has been conceived since the electoral victory of Hugo Chávez’s Bolivarian Revolution. Three elements determine its elaboration from an heroic mode : recurrent pretorisnism, long term political imaginaries and personnalism which characterize presidential function. All these elements make it possible to understand President Chávez’s leadership and to relativize nowadays’ « bolivarian cult » as well.
