The aim of this paper is to analyze the beliefs and attitudes of tobacco producers, within the theoretical framework of sustainable development and issues involving the productive relationship between men and nature. The results are built from the perspective of quality of life of human beings, including not only economic and sociocultural aspects as well as environmental (Dias, 2009). Data collection was performed by a qualitative method, combining in-depth interviews and commented survey application. The results point to a discussion about the rural development model in the family farm in southern Brazil. Most of the families visited said that tobacco is planted by the lack of viable alternatives, showing a contradictory relationship with this activity.
