Alberdi during the conflict. These letters are interesting for two main reasons: On the one hand, they provide a critical view of the war, from the point of view of a woman from the social elite of Buenos Aires, who shares Alberdi’s political convictions; and, on the other, they contain a number of discursive operations, that Caneva had to carry out with effort, in order to fulfill the duties of “war correspondent” that Alberdi somehow seemed to have assigned her. Thus, the letters represent a frame for the plurality of the accounts that show a partisan version of the war, which cannot be detached from the relationship between both persons. In regard to this, the Paraguayan position is defended by Caneva, not only due to her own personal beliefs, but also because a defeat of the Allies is seen as a condition for Alberdi’s return to the country. Likewise, the depiction he made of Mitre and the Brazilians, echoes the feeling of a certain social sector of which Caneva is a member, and provides a version of the characters as they were tailor-made for the interlocutor’s passions.Magdalena ArnouxCentre de Recherches sur les Mondes AméricainsarticleArgentinaepistolary stylegenrewar chroniclesdiscursive representationsAnthropologyGN1-890Latin America.
