Sumario: | The theatrical activity developed in Portuguese America during the 18th century can be divided into three categories: the Jesuits theatre, performed in churches, colleges and villages with the goal of converting native Indians to the Christian faith and reinforcing the faith of those already baptized; the theatre performed in permanent opera houses built in Portuguese America from 1719 and used for the purposes of financial gain by theatrical impresarios; and theatre performed in ephemeral stages built in public squares to celebrate the most important events related to the Kingdom, such as those concerning the private life of the royal family or relevant political events. These three categories of dramatic performance are distinct from one another in the way the performances were organized, the actors who were engaged, the public these theatrical works targeted and the desired objective of the performance. This article intends to approach the ephemeral theatre performed in Portuguese America, especially in the 18th century, with an emphasis on the repertoire performed and the artists engaged in these performances through the study of the panegyrics printed in Lisbon throughout the century. |
