Sumario:Safavid Ruler Shah Ismail II spent his 14 months rule with internal struggles. Since, following death of his father Shah Tahmasb, the clans started to struggle to dominate the state against each other. These struggles were also involved by Tajik, Circassia and Georgia origin groups together with the Harem. Since, the Circassia and Georgia originated wives of deceased Shah Tahmasb were in fight against each other to make their own children ruler. Finally, Ismail Mirza obtained the supports of his sister Perihan and strong clans; after some struggles, he had the throne and enabled some family members who might be threat to his rule to be killed. By the way, he also removed some Qizilbash chiefs who might also become a threat for his rule. After all, he had the policy to make Shiah more moderate and tolerate the Sunnis. Shah Ismail II tried to get close with Sunni ulema instead of Shiah ulema who were kept away from the palace. Also, to protect the borders against Sunni Ottomans at west and Uzbeks at east, he banned the controversial doctrines of Twelve Imams. In this regard, rituel cursing by ulama-sponsored was banned, while at the same time invective Shi’te slogans were erased from mosques and palace walls in Safavid capital Qazvin. In this study, the process in which Shah Ismail II dominated state and his religious policies will be tried to be explained with reference to Persian sources and researches.
