Alice Walker, as a womanist rather than feminist, reflects the female characters in the context of fight against patriarchy to promote self identities. Contrary to given roles, each of the character is a presented as a role model trying to reduce the passivity in terms of social and sexual aspects. Walker’s The Color Purple, with its outstanding themes ranging from female abuse to discrimination, voices how females unite to defy their predestined lives. The aim of this study is to illustrate the features of female characters displaying their perseverance to survive in a male dominated world. Particularly, it aims to explain how female solidarity changes an oppressed and dependent life to a free one which is based on woman’s self-actualization. Although the female characters suffer from oppressive male dominance, they defy patriarchal tyranny. Though The Color Purple depicts the female figures exposed to racism and inequality, Walker presents their efforts to unite to gain self confidence.
