Sumario:This article is reproduced historical evolution of Roma / Gypsies in Moldova from the fi rst mention of this ethnic communities in Moldova (1414) till to the publishing of the fi rst ethnographical census conducted in the Bessarabian villages from the early twentieth century (1916). The author examines the historical and political incongruity of the ethnonym expressions „Gypsy” and endonim „Roma”, origin of legal and social status of Gypsy slaves in Moldavia and their classifi cation on the basis of belonging to owner, way of life and traditional occupations. Unlike their brethren in Bessarabia, Gypsies in the Romanian principalities were released from captivity early and was treated in specifi c progressive humanistic principles of modern society. Finally, the author presents the mapping and toponymy of the compact rural settlements of the Roma from Bessarabia at the beginning of the twentieth century.
