The author examines the historical and political incongruity of the ethnonym expressions „Gypsy” and endonim „Roma”, origin of legal and social status of Gypsy slaves in Moldavia and their classifi cation on the basis of belonging to owner, way of life and traditional occupations. Unlike their brethren in Bessarabia, Gypsies in the Romanian principalities were released from captivity early and was treated in specifi c progressive humanistic principles of modern society.
