Sumario:Reinforcement spacers are important parts in reinforced concrete structures, and their effect on durability is of great concern. Low quality reinforcement spacers may form weak points in concrete structures. In this research, properties of concrete spacers are modified by polymer impregnation with Methyl methacrylate (MMA). The process of polymer impregnation is very suitable to concrete spacers due to their small size and high importance. The results showed an increase of breaking load for polymer impregnated spacers by about 250% compared to control specimens. The durability properties of spacers such as water absorption, freezing and thawing and acid resistance of the polymer impregnated spacers were assessed and compared to the unimpregnated spacers. The performance of the degraded spacers due to freezing and thawing and due to acid attack was evaluated by measuring the weight loss and visual inspection. The tests showed that the polymer impregnation improved remarkably the durability properties of concrete spacers.
