Sumario:The article studies the stages of formation of the concept of connotation in linguistics in a historical perspective. The specific contents of the term in the logical-philosophical, semiotic, pragmatic, lexicological, linguocultural and stylistic approaches are discussed. The term “connotation” was introduced within the logical-philosophical paradigm to point out the features by means of which an object can be counted to a class of objects.
