Sumario: | Considering the tourism potential to lead to the development and the growing demand for social tourism, this article aims to analyze the development of tourism in a pacified community, from the perspective of sustainable development. A literature review was conducted to address the issue of slums, the relationship between tourism and development, and the notion of sustainable development. For data collection, there were two groups discussion: one with locals involved in tourism in the community, the Morro do Cantagalo, in Rio de Janeiro; and another with residents who do not have this engagement. An interpretative analysis was performed from developed sustainability categories based on Sachs (2009), which considers multiple dimensions, such as: economic, social, political, cultural, ecological and territorial. The results indicate that the community has only been changed in economic aspect, but this change is perceived only by those residents who have an occupation related to tourism in the community. It suggests, therefore, a deficiency in the social criteria of sustainability, since income improvement from tourist activities does not occur in an equitable manner, being restricted to some residents. |
