A literature review was conducted to address the issue of slums, the relationship between tourism and development, and the notion of sustainable development. For data collection, there were two groups discussion: one with locals involved in tourism in the community, the Morro do Cantagalo, in Rio de Janeiro; and another with residents who do not have this engagement. An interpretative analysis was performed from developed sustainability categories based on Sachs (2009), which considers multiple dimensions, such as: economic, social, political, cultural, ecological and territorial. The results indicate that the community has only been changed in economic aspect, but this change is perceived only by those residents who have an occupation related to tourism in the community.
