Sumario: | As there are positive factors promoting scientific development, there are also factors that may affect productivity negatively in universities which train qualified manpower and develop scientific knowledge. The term defined as “academic inbreeding" in foreign literature is known as one of the factors that adversely affects productivity and scientific success in academia. In case of recurrence of such a situation in the process, it may damage the scientific productivity, so this term has been discussed and opposed against by academicians recently. Academic inbreeding is seen as a major obstacle in forming environments where can occur original works, do qualified opinion discussions, gain different perspectives in the universities that are responsible for producing knowledge, being open to new ideas, transmit scientific knowledge to future generations. The aim of this research is to present a conceptual and analytic framework based on the term “academic inbreeding” which doesn’t have equivalent in Turkish. In this study, the term that is called “academic inbreeding” in English is translated as “akademik vesayet” into Turkish. The term “academic inbreeding is defined as the practice of having PhDs employed by the university that trained them. Although the international literature on academic inbreeding is quite developed, this term has been analyzed in few studies in Turkey. In this study, it is focused on the effects of the term academic inbreeding on scientific community and form a theoretical base concerning the topic. In this respect, by leading to the realization of studies on this term and its effects, this study is expected to provide an important contribution to the literature. |
