The degenerationists ideas of physicians Luis Vergara, Florentino Caro and Augusto Orrego Luco, which circulated in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century are analyzed. The weight of inherited culture paradigm is discussed in some publicitary messages that circulated in the 1920s. Regarding the establishment of psychology as a scientific discipline, the introduction into the country of the Stanford Binet IQ test by Luis Alberto Tirapegui in 1925 are discussed. The idea of intelligence in described eugenics terms is discussed from works of Dr. Carlos Mönckeberg and Carlos Edwards Bello and the phisicians Juvenal Barrientos and Edgardo Schirmer, among others concerned about the relationship between intelligence and eugenics. The central proposal of this work is that the consideration of intelligence and mental fitness was essential in the development of eugenics in Chile and that there is a continuity between the theory of degeneration, eugenics and, ultimately, the development of psychology as a scientific discipline.Marcelo SánchezCentre de Recherches sur les Mondes Américainsarticleeugenicsmeasurement of intelligence in Chilehistory of psychology and psychiatry in Chileintelligence and eugenics in ChileAnthropologyGN1-890Latin America.
