A connection between the gestalt fundamental principles and musical syntax has been tried to be established and this connection has been associated with the configuration fields of sight-reading abilitiy. Various resourches have been reviwed and assessed and some examples have been presented in this direction. As a result of examined samples, it has been understood that the laws of figure-ground, proximity, similarity, common direction, simplicity, closure and grouping is effectively taken place in music and therefore, the presence of the arrangements based on the cognitive perception of the reader on notation. The figure-ground principle provides the understanding of the relationship between musical theme, accompaniment and rhythmic structure while the other principles aforementioned assume an active role to define the periodical and structural features of a musical piece. There seems to be the confirming opinions in this direction by the scanned resourches. It is believed that the association of gestalt principles with music will progress the musical perception in the direction of seeing the outline of the music and the rhythmic, melodic, harmonic structures which isconstituted by the metric and tonal units and in the direction of seeing the meaningful relationship between this structures. Also it is believed that this integral approach will provide the acquirement about the understanding of structural process of written music while reading at first sight.Erdem ÇağlarFatih AKBULUTFırat Universityarticlegestalt, sightreading, metrical unit, tonal unit, configuration, musical syntaxSocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 10, Iss 61, Pp 25-36 (2019)
